Christian Gian Karlo Arca dominated the U17 blitz category in the 18th Asian Schools Chess Championships in Bangkok, Thailand.
The 15-year-old FIDE Master drew his ninth and final round match against fellow Filipino Oscar Joseph Cantela. He then secured victory over Turkmenistan’s Serdar Bayramov in a tiebreaker to claim the gold medal.
Arca and Bayramov were tied for first place with 7.5 points each. However, Arca secured the gold medal due to the “win-over-the-other” rule, as he had defeated Bayramov in their third-round encounter.
“I would like to dedicate this victory to my countrymen,” shared Arca.
Arca also took home two silver medals from the individual and team standard with Cantela and Lemmuel Jay Adena.
Arca also earned two silver medals: one in the individual standard event and another in the team standard event alongside Cantela and Adena. Meanwhile, the team of Arleah Cassandra Sapuan, Kate Nicole Ordizo, and Beatrice Ann Bombales won the bronze medal in the rapid event.
