If you happen to buy a “Shrilling Chicken” that went viral once because of its funny, loud sounds when squeezed, you better throw it away or at least keep it away from children.
These toys have been banned for a long time, in case you didn’t know. But you may not be aware of it or even think it was when many shops still sell them for around PHP50 each.
The China-manufactured meme toy has been found to contain undisclosed additives. These additives could expose kids to hazardous chemicals, with one harmful chemical being 8.4% di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP). DEHP is a known endocrine-disrupting chemical that can have a negative impact on the body’s endocrine system, affecting hormones and leading to various health issues, including reproductive development effects.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has ruled the toy harmful since 2020. However, the toxic watch group brought it back to the forefront because it is still available in many local shops today.
This is not the only toy that could harm your children, though. According to the group, many toys still lack mandatory toy safety labeling requirements under RA 10620 (The Toy and Game Safety Labeling Law).
“BAN Toxics calls the attention of the regulatory agencies to immediately conduct post surveillance and confiscation efforts to eliminate the illegal selling of unsafe toys in the market,” stated Ban Toxics.
So when buying toys for your children or others, always choose reputable brands with safety certifications to avoid repercussions.
