Valenzuela City has been awarded the prestigious Gawad Liyab 1st Place for Outstanding Local Government Unit in the Highly Urbanized/Independent Component City category at the 2024 National Literacy Awards.
The awards were presented by the Department of Education’s Literacy Coordinating Council (LCC) in Mandaue City, Cebu on December 12th.
The Gawad Liyab award recognizes LGUs and NGOs implementing effective literacy programs, policies, and projects. The LCC uses the term “Liyab” to represent the passionate pursuit of universal literacy, achieved through the collaboration of stakeholders and partners.
Valenzuela’s win is a testament to its commitment to providing high-quality and inclusive education. The city’s award-winning Education 360 Degrees Investment Program has been instrumental in promoting literacy and improving the lives of its citizens.
“I may be the happiest Mayor in the Philippines because we achieved a triple win for the Valenzuelano Family. We only have one goal, and that is to provide quality education and service to every Valenzuelano – a mission that Senator Win started two decades ago, which Secretary Rex promoted, and now we continue to strengthen,” shared Valenzuela City Mayor Weslie “Wes” Ting Gatchalian in Filipino.
Alongside Valenzuela City, Butuan City, Santiago City, Dagupan City, and Ormoc City were also National Finalists for the Gawad Liyab Award in the Highly Urbanized/Independent Component City Category.
Valenzuela City also received a special award for having the Outstanding Financial Literacy Program from the Cebuana Lhuillier Foundation.
The National Literacy Awards are held every two years. They look for excellent local government units (LGUs) and non-government organizations (NGOs) that promote effective literacy practices to reduce poverty, create job opportunities, meet community needs, support freedom, and make educational facilities available to everyone.
