A wise writer once said to follow one’s most intense obsessions mercilessly. That is, to stay true to oneself and follow one’s passions without compromise.
Ephraim Porciuncula Bie, a student journalist from the University of Santo Tomas (UST) in Manila, did just that to ace the 2023 Bar Examinations by doing what he does best: giving it his all.
Bie passed with a rating of 89.2625, as announced by the Supreme Court on Tuesday, December 5.
Of 10,387 examinees who took the Philippines’ most difficult licensure exam for lawyers, only 3,812 passed. He was the top scorer.
Bie is thrilled but has yet to grasp his success, according to Rappler’s report.
“It’s been a frenzy, to be honest. I’m just elated right now and have not completely come to terms with the situation,” he said.
Bie graduated with a Journalism degree from UST in 2015. He wrote for the local college paper, The Flame. He also graduated as class valedictorian from the UST faculty of civil law.
He currently works as an underbar in the litigation department of Divina Law, a top law firm owned by UST faculty of civil law Dean Nilo Divina. Litigation lawyers are responsible for representing clients in court and should have a strong understanding of criminal law.
Bie had always dreamed of becoming a lawyer since he was young.
“[I want to] serve the people as much as I can, to give back to the community, to use the legal knowledge and expertise I gained from my alma mater, UST, for the rule of law, for justice,” he said to ABS-CBN News Channel.
Bie achieved what he dreamed of becoming, not by going for a workaround but by going the extra mile and having faith in something beyond himself.
“It’s somewhat the culmination of hard work and prayers,” he told News5.
