Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) President Abraham Tolentino initiated plans for the country’s return to track cycling at the International Cycling Union (UCI) 193rd Congress in Zurich, Switzerland.
The POC president has started talks with the UCI and its president, David Lappartient. In further preparation, a new UCI-standard indoor 250-meter velodrome in Tagaytay City is set to open in the second quarter of 2025.
“The UCI provides support to all its member nations and I’m glad that with the velodrome in Tagaytay City, the Philippines could kickstart its return to active track cycling,” said Tolentino.
He shared that support would be sourced by the UCI’s Solidarity and Emerging Countries Commission and Program. He also strengthened connections between the UCI and Southeast Asia, especially with his Indonesian counterpart, Raja Sapta Oktohari.
“The opportunities to continuously link PhilCycling not only with the UCI but with the rest of the world were present on the congress floor,” added Tolentino.
