Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Rex Gatchalian and Vice President and Secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd) Sara Duterte launched the pilot testing of ‘Tara, Basa!’ Tutoring Program at Rizal High School in Pasig City on August 2.
This reformatted program is designed to help college students from low-income families who are going through tough times. It also aims to support grade school students who struggle with reading, especially those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, it seeks to empower parents and guardians to become teachers for their children.
In the pilot run on August 2, over 6,000 college students and more than 63,000 Grade 1 learners and their parents will get to enjoy the perks of this new program. The orientation and training of college students to become tutors for the program was completed.
The people who volunteered to teach reading and be ‘Nanay-Tatay’ teachers are from 20 universities and colleges, while the students are from 490 elementary schools in the National Capital Region (NCR).
The tutoring program will be tested out in several cities in the NCR, including Caloocan, Valenzuela, Malabon, Navotas, Manila, Mandaluyong, Makati, Pasay, Las Pinas, Quezon City, Marikina, San Juan, Pasig, Taguig, Paranaque, Muntinlupa, and Pateros.
“Young Filipinos are the pillars of our country’s future. Through Tara, Basa! Tutoring Program, we are encouraging their involvement in nation-building by helping them to become more involved in their communities and build the skills and confidence that they need to become future leaders,” shared DSWD spokesperson Asst. Secretary Romel Lopez.
