Phew.
Heat waves after heat waves this summer, amirite?
As temperatures continue to soar and heat waves become more common, keeping your little ones comfortable and safe can be a challenge… But, fear not!
With a bit of creativity and preparation, you can turn these scorching summers into unforgettable bonding experiences with your children. Take note: Going to the beach or outside somewhere other than your yard is not included.
Creating DIY Cooling Stations
Assuming you have a backyard, you can transform it into an oasis for the whole family to enjoy while being under the sun. Set up shaded areas, such as umbrellas or canopies. Then, get a bit inventive in making your makeshift misting stations or fans available. Finally, add water play activities like kiddie pools or sprinkles for the ultimate chill zone.
Planning Indoor Activities
If you don’t have a backyard or the heat outside is unbearable, staying indoors is the natural way to go. Find the cool spots in the house with air conditioning and turn them into cozy hangout zones. Then, depending on how your family usually hang out together, set up movie marathons or indoor games― (video gaming, karaoke-ing, you name it. Make everyone so involved in the activity that they will be distracted to notice the heat.
Crafting Refreshing Treats
Beat the heat with treats. Even better, involve your family in making the treats! Create homemade popsicles or ice cream with your kids. You can also pretend to be a bartender and slide them with fruit-based mixed beverages. Or, if we’re going fancy, get crazy with making halo-halo.
Staying Hydrated and Healthy
The heat wave is an excellent opportunity to remind your kids of the benefits of staying hydrated. If they find water too bitter, you can feed them fruits with high water content, like watermelon.
Watch for signs of dehydration and heat-related illnesses, such as fatigue, dizziness, or nausea. If you notice any of these symptoms, don’t hesitate to seek medical attention immediately.
