Doing what they promised, Valve has announced that older versions of Windows Operating Systems, namely 7, 8, and 8.1, will no longer be supported by its gaming marketplace, Steam.
Valve cautioned that the platform may become unstable due to its reliance on an embedded version of Google Chrome. However, users can still access it after it has ceased to be compatible.
Not receiving support means missing out on updates, security patches, and OS features that may be unavailable on older Windows versions. Moreover, users can no longer receive any technical support.
“Computers running these operating systems, when connected to the internet, are susceptible to new malware and other exploits which will not be patched. That malware can cause your PC, Steam and games to perform poorly or crash. That malware can also be used to steal the credentials for your Steam account or other services,” stated Valve.
If you want to use all of Steam’s features, you must upgrade to either Windows 10 or 11.
