A group of successful and respected business people and organizations from the Philippines have united to donate SGD4 million to help exceptional Filipino students who want to pursue higher education at the Singapore Management University (SMU).

This is the largest-ever donation from a group of international donors to support education and industry growth in the Philippines.

Scholarships will be awarded to Filipino students based on academic performance, and all SMU undergraduates will be eligible for internship grants. Starting from 2024/2025, scholarships will provide SGD 20,000 per year to undergraduates and postgraduates and SGD 5,000 per year to exchange and internship students. The fund will benefit up to 11 students annually and will continue indefinitely.

The SMU Philippine Community Fund has received a tremendous boost from Jaime Augusto Zóbel de Ayala, Chairman of Ayala Corporation and Chair of SMU International Advisory Council (IAC) Philippines. He brought together various organizations, foundations, and individuals to support the education of exceptional Filipino students. He also played a crucial role in leading the fundraising efforts for the cause. His contribution and leadership have been instrumental in advancing the educational aspirations of deserving students in the Philippines.

“It is an honor for the International Advisory Council of the Philippines to kickstart the SMU Philippine Fund. We hope that this will catalyze tremendous growth and impact for Filipinos who wish to study in one of the region’s leading higher education institutions,” shared Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala.

The contributors to the gift are:

  • Bank of the Philippine Islands
  • Filinvest International Pte Ltd
  • First Philippine Holdings Corporation
  • Globe Telecom, Inc.
  • Gokongwei Brothers Foundation
  • ICTSI Foundation, Inc

“Aligned with SMU Vision 2025’s strategic priority of Growth in Asia, this partnership will contribute to the region’s development and enhance the university’s international standing. As we commemorate 55 years of bilateral relations between Singapore and the Philippines this year, I am confident that this collaboration will leave a lasting and positive impact on both countries, and I look forward to further engagements with industry leaders in the Philippines,” said Professor Lily Kong, SMU President.
