The 32nd World Senior Chess Championships ended positively for the Philippine team, scoring two gold and one bronze medal.
The international competition was held at the Hotel Villa Baleira on Porto Santo Island, Portugal, where two outstanding Filipino seniors earned medals in the Blitz event and Rapid events.
International Master Chito Danilo Garma, hailing from Sampaloc, Manila, secured the gold medal in the Blitz event of the 50+ category. His impressive performance reached an 8-1 record.
Meanwhile, FIDE Master Mario Mangubat from Minglanilla town, Cebu, excelled in the Rapid event of the 65+ category, finishing at the top with a score of 4.5 points out of six games. Additionally, he secured a bronze medal in the Blitz event of the same category, achieving a score of 5.5 points.
In the standard time control format, Garma finished 24th out of 80 players in the 50+ category. For the 65+ category, International Master Jose Efren Bagamasbad ranked 46th, and Mangubat placed 48th among 89 entries.
National Master Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr. coached and headed the Philippine chess team, supported by the Philippine Sports Commission.
