PH Dominates Asian Youth, Junior Weightlifting Championships with 25 Medals

The Philippines achieved notable success at the Asian Youth (13 to 17 years of age) and Junior (15 to 20 years of age) Weightlifting Championships in Qatar, securing 25 medals: five golds, seven silvers, and six bronzes.

This impressive performance earned the national team a third-place finish in the Youth division, trailing behind Vietnam and India.

In the Junior division of the recent competition, the Philippines secured a fifth-place finish, earning three silver and four bronze medals. The country trailed behind Vietnam, Thailand, Chinese Taipei, and Turkmenistan. One of the notable performances would be Zamboanga City’s Aldrin Colonia, who won two gold medals in the Youth men’s 49kg category and a silver in the snatch. Meanwhile, Cebu City’s Eron Borres claimed the snatch gold in the same category.

In the Youth women’s 55kg division, Jhodie Peralta from Zamboanga also stood out, winning two golds and a silver. Prince Keil Delos Santos of Angono, Rizal, added three silvers in the Youth men’s 55kg division and three bronzes in the Junior division.

Other talented medalists included Althea Bacaro, Princess Jay Ann Diaz, Alexsandra Diaz, Rose Jean Ramos, Angeline Colonia, and Rosalinda Faustino, highlighting the depth of Filipino athletic talent.

“This was a successful campaign and a stepping stone for Los Angeles 2028. Other countries like India and Vietnam are catching up, so we need to intensify our efforts,” shared Monico Puentevella, President of Samahang Weightlifting ng Pilipinas.
