Guangdong OPPO Mobile Telecommunications Corp., Ltd. (OPPO) and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) recently held a signing ceremony to strengthen their collaboration.

This agreement builds on their previous partnership, established in 2022, and aims to promote integration within the Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA).

OPPO and PolyU will work together to boost funding and technology investment. They will upgrade the “PolyU-OPPO Joint Innovation Research Centre,” marking a new chapter in their partnership focused on AI imaging technology.

The signing ceremony took place last Friday (1 November) at the PolyU campus, witnessed by Prof. Jin-Guang TENG, President of PolyU, and Mr Jason LIAO, President of OPPO Research Institute. The agreement was also signed by Prof. Christopher CHAO, Vice President (Research and Innovation) of PolyU, and Mr Zheng QIN, Head of Industry-Academia Affairs of OPPO.

Under the terms of the agreement, the “PolyU-OPPO Joint Innovation Lab” will be upgraded to the “Joint Innovation Research Centre.” Additionally, OPPO will invest at least RMB 30 million over the next five years to increase the number of co-trained PhD and postdoctoral researchers. This funding aims to promote technical development and exploration of imaging algorithms, while further strengthening the collaboration between OPPO and PolyU in AI imaging technology.

“Adhering to our mission of ‘Technology for Mankind, Kindness for the World’, OPPO is dedicated to deepening the integration of academia-industry cooperation in the field of AI through this renewal, bringing more innovative intelligent imaging experiences to global users,” said Jason LIAO.

In just three years, the Joint Lab has reached several significant milestones by developing and implementing advanced imaging algorithms. The AI super-resolution technology has been integrated into multiple OPPO products, greatly improving the image quality of telephoto photography. Additionally, implementing HDR imaging algorithms allows users to take high-quality photos in various lighting conditions, significantly enhancing their photography experience.

The ongoing partnership between OPPO and PolyU will drive the advancement of AI imaging technology, fostering innovation and talent development in the Greater Bay Area (GBA). Looking ahead, both parties aim to reinforce their collaboration between academia and industry, fully exploring and promoting innovative applications of AI imaging technology.
