Meta announced new measures regarding AI-generated content. Starting in May 2024, videos, audio, and images detected as AI-generated will have labels.

According to the company, this labeling system would provide a better context to help people make informed decisions about the content they view.

“We agree that providing transparency and additional context is now the better way to address this content. The labels will cover a broader range of content in addition to the manipulated content that the Oversight Board recommended labeling. If we determine that digitally-created or altered images, video or audio create a particularly high risk of materially deceiving the public on a matter of importance, we may add a more prominent label so people have more information and context,” Meta stated in its press release.

Content that has some inaccuracies won’t undergo any rating process. Additionally, the labeling process won’t have any impact on the expression, opinions, debate, satire, humor, or business disputes. At its riskiest scenarios, AI-generated content removal would only apply to those “tied to harm.”

Meta continuously collaborates with its industry partners to accurately label AI-generated content and develop shared technical standards.
