The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) is warning customers to avoid clicking on fake emails allegedly sent by e-wallet service GCash.
According to CICC Executive Director Alexander K. Ramos, scammers are now using Viber and Facebook Messenger to send emails instead of the usual SMS messages. These emails would contain a link prompting customers to provide personal and account details, leading to the theft of information.
“We always advise the public to avoid clicking any links from unknown or suspicious senders. Scammers used to send such links through SMS but now they have found another platform,” said Ramos.
Ramos stated that the volume of fraudulent text messages has significantly decreased following the enactment of the SIM Registration Act, also known as Republic Act No. 11934, on December 27, 2022.
GCash has also been intensifying its efforts to take down phishing sites and malicious social media posts. By far, the e-wallet platform has blocked 4 million accounts in the past year.
Victims of online scams are advised to contact the Inter-Agency Response Center (IARC) hotline at 1326.
