Leading telecommunications company Globe has boosted its digital innovation efforts by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the GSM Association (GSMA). This agreement aims to improve the compatibility and delivery of mobile services across different networks worldwide.

Through this partnership, the telco will have access to the GSMA Open Gateway, which is an Applications Programming Interface (API) facility. This API represents a significant change in how the telecom industry designs and delivers services, focusing on an API-driven economy.

Utilizing a shared set of open-source APIs reusable for various objectives, developers and cloud providers may access operator networks through single entry points, allowing swift service deployment across the largest global connectivity platform. What’s more, the GSMA’s Open Gateway brings out the full capabilities of 5G networks, empowering developers to build meaningful and impactful services that can harness the 5G network’s capacity and security.

“This groundbreaking effort allows real-time access and interconnection with the Globe network via open global APIs, opening up numerous opportunities for delivering more value to our customers and generating new revenue streams,” said Ernest L. Cu, President and CEO of Globe during the recent MOU signing attended by Julian M. Gorman, GSMA Asia Pacific Head.

The Open Gateway has been launched with eight network APIs. These APIs provide various capabilities, including enhancing security and fraud prevention, enabling secure authentication, and facilitating location-based services. The eight network APIs are SIM Swap, Quality on Demand, Device Status, Number Verification, Simple Edge Discovery, One-Time Password (SMS), Carrier Billing – Check Out, and Device Location.

Globe sees great potential for these common APIs in eHealth, agritech, emergency services, carbon accounting, and the Internet-of-Things (IoT) among other sectors. Open APIs can also help industries like education by integrating mobile learning platforms into school curricula. It can benefit entertainment by providing personalized content recommendations and interactive features to enhance user experience. It can also improve secure eCommerce and transportation through better traffic management systems and real-time updates on public transportation schedules.

GSMA’s Open Gateway will help Globe make the most of its 5G network. This includes using it for the Internet of Things (IoT) and providing great services for both individual and business customers.
