The Philippine national basketball team, Gilas Pilipinas, is preparing for a hectic schedule leading up to the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament (OQT) in Latvia in July. The team is set to start its training camp closer to the end of the upcoming month.
Erika Dy, the executive director of Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP), has revealed that the national team will gather again on June 22.
The team will meet at the Inspire Sports Academy in Laguna, where head coach Tim Cone will oversee the squad’s preparation for the OQT, which represents the final opportunity for the team to qualify for the Paris Olympics in July.
After Laguna, Gilas will have a friendly game against Turkey on June 27 before traveling to Poland for another tune-up match. They will then compete in the OQT in early July.
Gilas is scheduled to play against Latvia, ranked eighth in the world, on July 3 at the Arena Riga in Riga, Latvia. The team will then face Georgia, ranked 23rd in the world, on July 4 at the same venue.
Dy assured that the national team will prepare for the FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers in November, regardless of their OQT result.
