Filipino chef Lord Maynard Llera, the owner of the modern Filipino dining establishment Kuya Lord in Los Angeles, received his first-ever title of Best Chef: California at the 2024 James Beard Foundation Restaurant and Chef Awards.
The accolade is often dubbed the “Oscars of the food industry” and is awarded to individuals with exceptional skills and accomplishments in culinary arts, hospitality, media, and the broader food sector.
Born and raised in Lucena City, Quezon Province, Llera made the decision to relocate to the United States back in 2004 to delve into the world of culinary arts and bring to life his vision of a restaurant infused with Filipino culture, traditions, and tastes. Reflecting on his experiences, he acknowledged the hurdles he faced as an international student from the Philippines.
“I realized, there was nothing easy in life and sometimes you just have to take the challenge to move forward and achieve your ultimate goal,” said Llera.
Llera’s Kuya Lord Restaurant originally started as a temporary establishment and is now a high-quality fast-casual eatery that offers traditional Filipino dishes from the Lucena City area in Quezon Province, Philippines.
“This recognition is not just a testament to my individual efforts and hardwork but a reflection of the support and encouragement and collaboration from many wonderful people in my life. I am fortunate enough to have mentors, friends and family all throughout this journey,” he shared.
Filipino visitors and residents in Los Angeles can follow Llera’s Kuya Lord in Instagram.
