The Filipino boxing team achieved success at the E-Work Arena in Busto Arsizio, Italy, on March 5, thanks to Mark Ashley Fajardo and Ronald Chavez Jr.’s consecutive victories.
Nineteen-year-old Fajardo defeated Portuguese boxer Albertino Monteiro in the third round of the 63.5 kg light welterweight category. Meanwhile, Ronald Chavez Jr. emerged victorious via a split decision against Bruno De Barros Fernandez of Cabo Verde.
On March 3, Rogen Ladon won a split decision against Federico Emilio Serra of Italy. He followed this up with another victory on March 6 in the round of 32 preliminaries, knocking out Said Mortaji of the Marshall Islands.
In the men’s 92 kg division, John Noble Marvin defeated Pouria Amiri of Iran in the second round. He won by knockout, which means he hit his opponent hard enough that the referee had to stop the fight to ensure Amiri was okay. Marvin emerged as the winner of the fight.
Nesthy Petecio, a Filipino boxer who won a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2020, won her opening round in the women’s 57-kilogram division. On March 3, she defeated Andela Brankovic, a Serbian boxer, in a quick and impressive match in the 1st World Boxing Qualifying Tournament.

A few Filipino boxers will compete in different weight categories until March 11, such as Carlo Paalam, who won a silver medal in the men’s 57 kg division at the Tokyo Olympics, and Aira Villegas and Claudine Veloso.
Only 49 of the 248 boxers participating in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris will advance to the semifinals. There will be 124 female and 124 male boxers competing. The boxing competitions will be held from July 27 to August 10 at the Roland-Garros Stadium and North Paris Arena.
