If you often use wet wipes, may it be for yourself or for your kids, be wary of their product contents. The watchdog group is bringing attention to unauthorized wet wipes containing harmful ingredients that can irritate the skin of children or even adults with sensitive skin.
The EcoWaste Coalition has urged consumers not to buy baby wipes listing “methylisothiazolinone” and “methylchloroisothiazolinone” as ingredients.
These chemicals, which are preservatives, have been banned in leave-on products by health authorities, as they can trigger allergic contact dermatitis in sensitive people.
Other leave-on products that should not include these preservatives are hand and body lotion, hand sanitizers, sunscreens, deodorants, hair styling gel, pomade, spray and wax, and various make-up products.
In 2017, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) banned these preservatives in leave-on cosmetic products, which took effect a year later.
Off-brand baby wipes Baby Tender “Mama” Baby Wipes and Baby Tender “Sun Tad” Baby Wipes contain such harmful chemicals as discovered by the EcoWaste Coalition. It also doesn’t provide information about their manufacturers and distributors. What’s more, they are sold illegally without valid certificates of product notification issued by the FDA.
Under the watchdog group’s latest market monitoring, these baby wipes are offered at the Novo Department Store in Caloocan City and Youka Store in Naga City, Cebu Province. These products are available in blue, pink, orange, and yellow packaging. So watch out and avoid these off-brand wet wipes!
