The Davao Region’s Field Office 11 of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is helping families affected by flash floods by providing food packs. The floods were caused by heavy rainfall from the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) in the Davao Region.

“We received reports from our Davao Field Office of several incidents of flooding in Davao Occidental. As of today, we have extended 887 family food packs worth Php541,070 to the affected localities for distribution to their affected constituents,” shared Irene Dumlao, Assistant Secretary for Disaster Response Management Group (DRMG) and DSWD spokesperson.

Each food pack includes 6 kg of rice, 10 canned goods, 5 sachets of coffee, and 5 sachets of cereal drink. This is enough to feed a family of five for two days.

Dumlao reported that the DSWD FO-11 is constantly coordinating with local government units (LGUs) that have open evacuation centers. She added there are about 739 families or 3,158 individuals sheltering in five evacuation centers in Davao Occidental.

She also notes that the regional office has a total of 157,339 family food packs (FFPs) and standby funds ready for augmentation should the need arise, as noted by Assistant Secretary Dumlao.

The DSWD Field Office-SOCCSKSARGEN is coordinating with local governments in Region 12, affected by the ITCZ, to provide assistance, having initially extended PHP86,000 in relief aid to Alabel town, Sarangani. Regional Director Loreto Cabaya Jr. reported that approximately 400 families, or 1,600 individuals, are currently in evacuation centers in General Santos City, Alabel, and Glan. DSWD personnel remain on standby to assist local governments in disaster operations during the holidays.
