Gaming has become a common way to bond between you and your children. But as a dad, finding the balance between age-appropriate and entertaining games for your child can be daunting.

It is so worth it though. Gaming with your kids can be entertaining when you find games that match your family dynamics.

Team-Up Adventures

Overcooked gameplay

Choose games that encourage teamwork. Try “Minecraft,” “Overcooked,” or anything LEGO-related. Work together on puzzles, build worlds, or cook virtually. I’d say this is one of the great ways to inspire creativity among your kiddos.

Learn While You Play

It Takes Two gameplay

If you want something more educational for your kids, try games that inspire creativity or encourage problem-solving. Games like “Portal,” “Stray,” or brain-teasing platformers such as “It Takes Two” can be both entertaining and thought-provoking. Nothing beats the look of pride in your kids when they complete challenges and telling them a good job.

Family Game Night Showdowns

Mario Kart 8 gameplay

“Mario Kart,” “Rocket League,” and “The Jackbox Party” are all about having fun, sharing some laughs, and inspiring wholesome competition. Gather the family together and see who comes out on top. Just don’t forget to go easy on your little ones! Else, it’ll become a crying session.

Life Simulations

Stardew Valley gameplay

Make trivial life more fun by playing simulation games such as “The Sims” series or “Stardew Valley,” engaging your kids to collaborate, build, and manage virtual worlds or characters together. I find these kinds of games the most effective to ease in real-life advises and guides for my children.

Make sure that the games you choose are appropriate for your child’s age and align with your family’s values.

Look for games rated E (Everyone) or E10+ (Everyone 10 and older), usually suitable for younger children.

Of course, teach your kids about responsible gaming and screen time. You can also use gaming as an opportunity to talk to your children and build a stronger bond. Share your favorite games with them and listen to their favorites too. This will help you guide their gaming choices without spoiling the fun.
